Beethoven | Choral Fantasia - complete |
Berlioz | Messe Solennelle - Gratias only |
Puccini | Turandot - closing scene (uncut completion) |
Schubert | "Trout" quintet (4th mvt) |
Verdi | Libera me (V.'s contribution to the planned requiem for Rossini) |
Richard Strauss | "Ein Heldenleben" (from battle scene to end) |
The conclusion of the Beethoven sounds like a trial run for the finale of the Choral Symphony. The Berlioz is a recently-discovered work in which material is heard which later became the 3rd mvt of the "Symphonie Fantastique". The Puccini was left unfinished and this recording of the completion eliminates, for the first time, the 100-plus bar cut introduced by Toscanini. The Schubert is, of course, a set of variations on "Die Forelle". The Verdi was later used (in a modified form) in his familiar Requiem for Manzoni. The Strauss quotes numerous earlier compositions in "The hero's works of peace".
