The underlying idea of this programme was highly original. One particular house on a street in Brooklyn became, in the mid-20th century, a regular haven, drop-in location, call it what you will, for many of the artistic notables of the period. Amongst those who visited the house and stayed there for longer or shorter periods were W. H. Auden, Salvador Dali and numerous composers including all those featured in the programme. Britten's opera Paul Bunyan, although not a success, earns its place in the above list because it was a collaboration between Britten and Auden.
