Cello-and-piano recitals are always popular with our patrons so we are pleased to open our season with Tim Lowe (cello) and Annabel Thwaite (piano). We always try to feature a string quartet during the season and this year we have secured the outstanding Elias Quartet who will play, among other things, one of Beethoven's last quartets - No.13 in B flat Op.130. As originally written this work had as its Finale the colossal Grosse Fuge but this was considered too difficult in Beethoven's day (the word "unplayable" has even been applied) and he substituted a more modest finale. The Elias Quartet will, however, play the work with the Grosse Fuge. It should be quite an occasion! Please note that this concert will take place at Christ Church, Carr Road, Nelson. All the others are at St. Peter's Church, Church Street, Burnley. Maya Irgalina will play a solo piano recital and the season will end with the Orsino Piano Trio who will include one of Schumann's trios - a first for the Music Society.
As an extra event the society will present, in conjunction with St. Peter's Church, a guitar recital by Craig Ogden. This is a Saturday morning recital on October 15th starting at 11.00 a.m. Admission, which is not included in the Music Society subscription, costs £4.
We have been compelled, with regret, to raise our subscription for the four main events to £30 and the single ticket price for non-members to £10. Membership of the society confers the advantage of four concerts for the price of three. Everyone is very welcome but we especially value people who join the society. Booking of artists for the next season has to begin a year in advance and the willingness of people to become members gives us some assurance that we can go ahead with these future plans.
