Do you remember cellist Rowena Calvert? She appeared with pianist Alison Rhind in November 2008. She appears again this season as a member of the Cavaleri String Quartet, who open our season in October. Their concert, at Christ Church, Nelson, offers a programme of music by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Frank Bridge, and Bartók — the first time a Bartók quartet has ever appeared on a Music Society programme. There will be another return visit in November when we welcome Japanese pianist Mami Shikimori. We knew she'd played for us before but could hardly believe how long ago — September 2001! In March we have something a little out of the ordinary. Concert Royal is an ensemble of soprano, flute, cello and harpsichord who specialise in recreating the music and atmosphere of the 18th century. Their programme of Music from Handel's London is definitely one to look forward to. This, like the Cavaleri Quartet recital, will be held at Christ Church; the first time we have split our season two-and-two between Burnley and Pendle. Clarinet and piano make a most agreeable combination and we have clarinettist Kymia Kermani and pianist Belinda Jones to round off our seventeenth season.
